In this interactive session, participants will explore the concept of cultural incubation and the potential role it plays in the development of students’ mathematics identity. Using a combination of original research, empirical insights from the field, and critical observations about the structures of schooling, participants will explore the impact that mainstream math education plays in shaping students’ orientation and achievement in mathematics. Together, participants will raise important questions about which pedagogical, instructional and policy commitments are most promising in regards to implementing culturally-relevant and culturally-sustaining pedagogies in the classroom.
