Examining Implicit Bias

The implicit bias session will focus on helping educators examine their own biases and prejudices where issues of race are concerned. Given the racial diversity in schools today, it is critical that educators understand the role that implicit bias can play in instruction, expectations for students, teacher-student engagement, and relationship building. This session will deal directly with the role of race, racism, and the manner in which racial microaggressions can affect students’ prospects for learning and future academic success. Participants will engage in active learning activities that consider the origins and impact of assumptions, stereotypes, and microaggressions. Participants will begin to explore strategies for disrupting bias and consider ways to make school and classroom spaces more just and equitable.
