This session provides a practical and adjustable instructional module for middle and high school teachers that uses targeted writing assignments to make college mentally accessible to a wide range of students. WCS is designed to address two issues: 1) students’ hesitance and discomfort with writing; and 2) students feeling disconnected from the possibility of college. The module has three versions from educators to choose from (6-week, 9-week, and 12-week) and can be used to supplement current lesson plans or integrated into a pre-existing writing module. Ideal for ELA instructors, WCS can be adapted to other academic subjects. WCS meets students where they are and provides teachers a blueprint for addressing two issues that present inherent challenges in the classroom and beyond.
